Understanding the US Election System

The United States operates under a federal system. This means that power is split between the national government and individual state governments.
Congress is responsible for passing national laws. This has 2 houses:
House of Representatives
The House has 435 voting members. every person shows a congressional district. The amount of people are in that cities.
Each member serves 2 year terms so all 435 seats are contested every regular midterm and presidential election.
The Speaker of the House is the leader of the House and is elected by members of the House.
If no on wins in the election (like tie elections) then government house perform their own role to choose the President.
Senate
The Senate has 100 members. Each state has 2 members.
Unlike the House, there is no division based on population. Each state has the same amount of members whether it’s a small or large state.
Senators serve 6 year terms with around one third going up for election every 2 years.
The Senate also tribute in passing federal laws that are implimentable. They also have special powers such as confirming many presidential appointments, approving treaties and holding impeachment trials if the House votes to impeach an official.
How do candidates win?
Rules vary between each state.
Most states have a first past the post system. That’s mean which party have more seats they are going to win that elections . However some states have extra rules.
Georgia and Louisiana can have runoffs if no candidate receives the required majority. This means a second election will be held between the top candidates.
Maine and Alaska have ranked choice voting in certain congressional races. This means voters rank their choices. If no candidate wins the required majority, the least performing candidate will be dropped and votes will be redistributed based on the next preference.
Some states also have a top-two primary system. This means candidates from different political parties will run in the same primary. Only the top 2 candidates will go through to the general election. This can mean 2 candidates from the same party.
How are Governors elected?
Governors are directly elected by voters in their state.
Most states have 4 year terms, however, Vermont and New Hampshire have 2 year terms.
A Governor leads the executive branch of the state and has responsibility for implementing state laws. They can have duties such as creating budgets, signing or vetoing legislation, issuing executive orders and running state government departments.
Whilst they do not create federal laws, their decisions can have a huge impact on education, health, transport, public safety and other issues in their state.
How are the Results Tally in the US?

Results aren’t always released immediately after polls close.
Depending on the state, the amount of votes and the rules around postal and provisional voting, the results can take several hours or even days to tally.
Elections are managed by state and local officials. They will report the results.
News outlets and election analysts may also predict the winner using the official results.
A race can be called if there is enough evidence to suggest the trailing candidate does not have a realistic chance of winning. This doesn’t mean the results have been fully tallied and certified.
This means that predicted results, unofficial results and certified results may not match.
The numbers in this article are a snapshot of the live results. They will be updated as more races are called.
